If you are feeling overwhelmed by the number of options available for animal vitamins, minerals, supplements, and more, you’re not alone!
The pet food and supplement industry has grown significantly, but many owners find themselves overwhelmed by the dizzying array of formats (powders, tablets, chews, oils, treats, and more!), marketing claims, and ingredients. To take some of the stress off our clients, we have compiled a list of many of the supplements we use, recommend, and prescribe here to help cut through the noise:
Fullscript – we have an online Fullscript store front with many of our favorite dog and cat supplements, including Nordic Naturals, Standard Process, Rx Vitamins for Pets, and Vetri-Science Laboratories. These can all be ordered directly online and shipped right to your door!
Ramaekers Nutrition – it’s very unlikely you’ve made it through a consultation with us and NOT heard about Ramaeker’s products. We love them! I met Dr. Ramaeker at a vet conference in 2022, and have been using these products for my own animals, patients, and even myself! We proudly carry the full line of these products at Integrative Veterinary Care, and most of them are also available online directly from the Ramaeker’s Nutrition website. Specifically, here are some of our favorites:
- Vet Immune Professional line – designed to support the immune system during challenging times, such as illness, surgery, cancer, or auto-immune disease. Available for dogs and cats in either a powder or tablet form. There are also dosing guidelines for the dog and cat products available here.
- Equine Transfer Factor pellets – a daily nutritional supplement for horses of all ages.
- Equine Formula G – a powerful supplement to address muscle soreness, arthritis, joint function, and aging. This is an all-around favorite for our equine athletes! *NOTE this product needs to be absorbed through the mouth (gums, mucosa), so ask us about slow-feeding routines to promote absorption!
- Equine Performance Pack – specifically formulated for performance horses, this is a favorite of race horses, hunter/jumpers, and polo ponies!
- Stress Pack – providing support during stressful times, such as competition, recovery from illness or surgery, anxiety from travel, and more. We have used this product for everything from dogs, cats, horses, goats, pigs, birds, fish, and even honeybees! For a more economical option, the Livestock Stress Pack offers the same formula in bulk
Some of our common products are available by prescription only – these include TCM herbal formulas from Evergreen, Natural Path, Kan Herbs, Jing Tang Herbal, and Noah’s Arc Herbs. A few clients have found these products online via Amazon or other mega-distributors. We do NOT recommend obtaining herbal formulas outside of the practice or one of our herbal pharmacies. The same concept applies to prescription medications as well, such as parasite prevention and other drugs. Online vendors may offer adulterated or counterfeit products that pose a major risk to animal health. These rogue sellers frequently offer expired, diluted, or incorrectly stored medications, which can cause treatment failures, severe toxicity, or void manufacturer guarantees on preventative care.
To ensure authenticity, it is always best to obtain these pharmaceuticals, prescriptions, and preventatives directly from a veterinary practice, an associated pharmacy, or the manufacturer.
